The Route 60 and Franklin Street intersection, notorious for drivers not yielding to pedestrians, received a face lift. The newly installed solar pedestrian-activated rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) system complements new sidewalks with yellow tactile pedestrian downramps. The RRFB system will provide 80-90 percent compliance in drivers yielding to pedestrians at this high-risk crossing. When activated by push button, LED arrays flash in an alternating pattern to alert drivers and provide safe crossing for Malden residents.
To complete the intersection improvements, the Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA) used Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, with the support of Mayor Christenson, mitigation funds from Sagebrook Development, and financial support from Ward 7 Councillor Neal Anderson.
