City Officials and Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA) Executive Director Deborah Burke attended the groundbreaking for Bay State Commons at 368 Pleasant Street, Malden. Bay State Commons is a 30-unit condominium complex that will operate as a co-housing community. Co-housing balances private units with shared common spaces for group meals, activities, etc. to give residents the feeling of a traditional neighborhood. Residents will typically work with the architect to create a development plan for the units and common spaces. There are currently 175 co-housing communities nationally, according to Bay State Commons.
