Downtown Pocket Park Slated for More Improvements

JNJ Sacca, Inc. of Arlington is the low bidder on a contract to bring new improvements to FitzGerald Park, a pocket park located on Exchange Street in front of the CBD Garage. The park provides passive open space in the heart of Malden Center.  The park is named after the late David R. FitzGerald, a former longtime Administrator at the Malden Redevelopment Authority.

In the Spring of 2018, MaldenArts installed a mural on the façade of the garage bringing much renewed attention to this open space. The mural depicting the work of former Malden resident, Ed Emberley, author and illustrator of children’s books, provides a colorful, entertaining background for this green space.

The new improvements coming to the park, thanks to $50,000 in funding from the Community Development Block Grant program, will include installation of some synthetic turf so youngsters can get closer to the mural, some play equipment for toddlers, some new benches and improved lighting. Completion date is set for late May 2019.
