First Public Meeting Regarding Commercial Street Framework Plan was held July 19

On July 19, 2017, the City of Malden and Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA) held the first public meeting regarding the Commercial Street Framework Plan study (view PDF presentation).  Residents discussed strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for the Commercial Street corridor.  A second public meeting is expected to take place in September 2017. 

The public is invited to take part in the public meetings to share their knowledge of the study area, discuss potential framework strategies, and help shape the future of the corridor. Feedback about community values, goals, and priorities are critical to the success of this study.

The Commercial Street corridor is an underutilized industrial area south of downtown Malden. Areas like Commercial Street are under redevelopment pressure throughout the region. The City of Malden and the MRA are studying this area, with funding from MassDevelopment, to understand what changes are likely over time. The study will explore how to manage that change to promote jobs and economic development. This includes evaluating the current land and building uses, current and potential jobs, impacts and opportunities resulting from the Wynn Boston Harbor Casino, and improved access to the Malden River within the Commercial Street corridor.

Members of the public are also encouraged to fill out a questionnaire to share their ideas about the Commercial Street Corridor. Copies of the questionnaire and collection boxes are located in the lobby of City Hall Building 1 (110 Pleasant Street), the lobby of City Hall Building 2 (17 Pleasant Street) and the Malden Public Library (36 Salem Street).

Two targeted focus group meetings will also be held as part of this study. These groups include people with a specific understanding of the Commercial Street Corridor. The City and the MRA identified specific people, including representatives from community organizations, to share their expertise though several exercises.

A consultant team that includes Harriman and ICIC are assisting the City and the MRA. Harriman is a design and engineering firm. Its Boston studio has a focus on urban planning, urban design, and landscape architecture. ICIC’s research and advisory team helps to shape economic development strategies for inner cities.

The study will result in a framework plan for the area that identifies strategies and defines a clear implementation plan. This plan will include both short- and long-term approaches for future development and strategies to support a diversified job retention and creation.
