Malden Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Deborah Burke joined Jefferson Apartment Group Vice President Sandi Silk on a webinar talking about the successful transformation of Malden Center through a public private partnership.
The webinar, sponsored by MassDevelopment, attracted the attention of 42 persons including area planners, planning consultants and other municipal officials.
Malden Center is undergoing a significant transformation with the construction of a mixed-use development opposite the Malden Center MBTA and Commuter Rail Station. This transit oriented development has helped the City of Malden correct a 1970's planning mistake when it turned the end of its retail core into a dead end. The former barricade to Pleasant Street, which included the Malden Government Center and Police Station buildings, has been demolished and the street is being reopened. In its place will be 320 units of market rate housing, 22,000 square feet of retail/commercial space and a 44,000 square foot condominium for a new city hall. Residential tenants have begun moving into the complex.
There were many hurdles along the way with the the development which were ultimately resolved through this successful private public partnership. An alignment of key interests came together in this collaborative redevelopment process.
