Rental Assistance and Small Business Assistance Programs

Friday, May 8, 2020

The Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA), in partnership with the City of Malden, is administering Rental Assistance and Small Business Assistance programs to help Malden residents and businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The MRA will make applications for each program available in mid-May. Instructions on how to complete applications will be available in English, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Spanish, and Arabic.

Rental Assistance Program

The Malden Rental Assistance Fund will provide assistance to low-income Malden renters who are unable to pay rent due to the COVID-19 crisis. Residents must apply to determine eligibility and to be entered into a lottery. Applicants who are selected in the lottery will be asked to provide backup documentation supporting their application. If approved, the MRA will issue payment to the applicant’s landlord in the amount of one month’s rent.

Low-income households are those earning no more than 50% of the Area Median Income. The income limit is based on the number of people in your household (including roommates and children).

Income Limits:

$41,500 for a household of 1 person.
$47,400 for a household of 2 people.
$53,350 for a household of 3 people.
$59,250 for a household of 4 people.
$64,000 for a household of 5 people.
$68,750 for a household of 6 people.
$73,500 for a household of 7 people.
$78,250 for a household of 8 people.

Applicants must meet other criteria as well. Eligibility does not guarantee that your application will be accepted or that funding will be available.

We are working hard to launch this program in the next few weeks. To be notified when the program is launched and applications become available, please provide your contact information and we will notify you.

This program will be funded by $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds secured through the federal CARES Act. More information on this CDBG funding is available here. The MRA also anticipates receiving $250,000 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds. The MRA’s application for CPA funds is available here.

Small Business Assistance

The Small Business Assistance Program will provide direct grants to Malden businesses affected by the COVID-19 crisis. We are proud that this program has been endorsed by the Malden Chamber of Commerce.

The first round of assistance will include grants of up to $10,000 each to businesses with five or fewer full-time employees (or equivalents), including the owner. Priority will be given to businesses where the owner is low- or moderate-income, though businesses with a majority of employees who are low- or moderate-income may also apply. Eligible businesses that complete an application will be entered into a lottery. Businesses selected in the lottery will be asked to provide backup documentation supporting their request for assistance before receiving their grant.

Low- and moderate-income households are those earning no more than 80% of the Area Median Income. The income limit is based on the number of people in your household (including roommates and children).

Income Limits:

$62,450 for a household of 1 person.
